November 22, 2024Bali, Indonesia – 05 December 2024
PT Santomo Biomass Indonesia (President Director: Rumi Hoshino) proudly participated to present the company profile in the 8th Indonesia-Japan Energy Forum, an influential event fostering strategic energy cooperation between Indonesia and Japan. The forum highlighted critical discussions around energy transition and sustainability, featuring diverse panels covering oil and gas, mining, renewable energy, and emerging technologies like hydrogen and ammonia.
The governments of Indonesia and Japan organized the 8th Indonesia-Japan Energy Forum (IJEF) as an important event to strengthen strategic cooperation between Indonesia and Japan in the energy sector. The forum was attended by delegates consisting of government and business representatives from Indonesia and Japan.
Secretary General of ESDM Dadan Kusdiana expressed his appreciation for the forum’s contribution in strengthening bilateral relations for more than six decades. “The discussion at this forum highlighted the commitment of both countries to achieve Net Zero Emission which is outlined in national policies, including roadmap programs, as well as activities,” Dadan said during his opening remarks at the 8th IJEF in Bali, Thursday (5/12).
Indonesia has demonstrated its commitment to emission reduction with a target of 915 million tons of CO2 by 2030, including the energy sector’s contribution of 358 million tons. Dadan also mentioned the achievement in 2023, where emissions were successfully reduced by 128 million tons through energy efficiency, renewable energy development, and low-carbon technology.
Driving Energy Transition Through Strategic Panels. This first discussion discussed Oil and Gas Cooperation. This panel underscored the continuing relevance of oil and gas in supporting energy demand amidst the global transition to renewables. Key topics included Indonesia’s potential in upstream oil and gas investments and low-emission technologies like Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS).
Highlights:
- Collaboration opportunities between Indonesia and Japan to enhance oil and gas production while meeting emission reduction targets.
- Progress on CCUS technology implementation in Indonesia’s Sukowati Field.
- The second disscussion is Mining Sector Development. Discussions centered on Indonesia’s rich mineral resources, including nickel, bauxite, and copper, essential for renewable energy technologies like batteries for electric vehicles (EVs). Both countries explored pathways to strengthen the supply chain and promote sustainable mining practices.
Highlights:
- Indonesia’s policy to develop its downstream mineral processing for a robust EV battery industry.
- Opportunities for Japan to invest in critical mineral development aligned with its global supply chain strategies.
And the continued discussion is about Renewable Energy and Electricity. Renewable energy took center stage as panelists outlined Indonesia’s roadmap to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060. Discussions revolved around geothermal energy, variable renewable energy (VRE), and bioenergy development.
PT Santomo Biomass Indonesia presented its contributions:
- Advancing the bioenergy sector with sustainable biomass supply chains.
- Strengthening local partnerships to support Indonesia’s renewable energy goals.
The last discussion is about Hydrogen and Ammonia: The Future of Energy. With hydrogen and ammonia emerging as promising solutions for decarbonization, the panel explored Indonesia’s vast potential in developing green hydrogen and ammonia projects, supported by Japan’s advanced technologies.
Highlights:
- Collaborative projects like green ammonia factory development and co-firing in power plants.
- Pathways to establish Indonesia as a global hub for hydrogen production
Strengthening Indonesia-Japan Energy Partnerships
The forum emphasized the importance of collaboration between government bodies, private companies, and industry stakeholders to achieve shared goals of energy security and sustainability. PT Santomo Biomass Indonesia remains committed to contributing to Indonesia’s energy transition through innovative bioenergy solutions and international partnerships.
This cooperation not only aims to meet NZE targets but also opens up investment and innovation opportunities in the energy sector, with minerals being key in accelerating the transition to clean energy. Indonesia and Japan hope that the partnership that has existed for more than 65 years can accelerate the achievement of common goals in facing the challenges of global climate change.
Together, let’s accelerate the path toward a sustainable energy future.
